Fluid, Thermal and Chemical Processes

Faculty members and students in the Fluid, Thermal, and Chemical Processes (FTCP) Group draw from the basic sciences of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, transport phenomena, and chemistry to attack a wide variety of problems at the forefront of research in related fields. The FTCP Group is a natural home for graduate students with undergraduate backgrounds in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, aeronautical/aerospace engineering, thermal/power engineering, physical chemistry, or industrial chemistry. New graduate students in FTCP can choose from a number of potential advisors (see below) for their Sc.M. or Ph.D. thesis research. Most students accepted for graduate study in the FTCP Group pursue the Ph.D. degree.

Particular areas of research excellence in FTCP are energy and environmental technologies (Calo, Hurt, Suuberg); fluid mechanics, including biofluids, microfluidics and computational fluid dynamics (Breuer, Caswell, Liu, Richardson, Maxey, Karniadakis, Tripathi); and carbon materials, polymeric materials, and nanotechnology (Calo, Crawford, Hurt, Suuberg).

Research opportunities in FTCP areas are broadened by collaboration with faculty members in the Division of Applied Mathematics through a joint Center for Fluid Mechanics.
